EE has launched what it describes as the world’s first 4G action camera which is set to rival established brands like GoPro. The 4GEE Action Cam, which comes with a viewfinder watch, is expected to be on sale in the UK on 16th June 2015.
The 4GEE Action CAM is designed to broadcast live video and is ideal for those wanting to stream special moments to family and friends. Inspired by the increased popularity of live broadcasting apps, the camera will be used to capture unmissable moments such as a child’s first steps, as well as action footage of adventure sports and experiences.
The camera can capture both 13MP still images and full HD video (1080p), although 720p HD video will be used for broadcasting. As well as streaming the footage live via skeegle, a multimedia streaming platform, users can also store their videos and images on an SD card for later viewing. With three hours of active battery life and capacity for 64GB external memory, the camera provides plenty of opportunity for impressive footage. It will be available on a range of EE data plans as well as PAYG.
Along with the camera, 4GEE Action Cam users will get a lightweight case and a waterproof case – which protects the camera up to depths of 60 metres. Each camera is also accompanied by a viewfinder watch which allows the user to frame images and video and to start and stop the camera quickly and simply without having to use the camera controls. An Action Cam app is available on iOS or Android.
The 4GEE Action Cam is part of EE’s wider vision of connecting more than smartphones and tablets to its 4G network and is the first of several connected devices that EE plans to launch this year. The network’s connected strategy focuses on four key areas:
- Connected home – which is designed to make homes smarter, perhaps through lighting or security
- Connected you – which focuses on health and fitness as well as staying connected on the move
- Connected car – which includes the running of the car itself as well as connectivity within the car
- Connected business – which centres around making business more effective, flexible, and productive
According to Olaf Swantee, CEO, EE, “Over the past two years we’ve witnessed how 4G connectivity has changed behaviour and instilled a desire to connect and communicate instantaneously when out and about. We’ve introduced our ‘connected strategy’ as we understand our customers not only want superfast coverage, they want products that give them the very best experiences, coupled with the most innovative and exciting ways in which to share them. The 4GEE Action Cam is a great example of this, a product that keeps us connected in a new way, even in the most extreme conditions, sharing those epic moments as they unfold. It’s the first of several highly innovative products from our devices portfolio to be unveiled this year for work and for play, offering a video experience like no other currently available on the market.”
The 4GEE Action Cam was launched during a dare devil stunt at Wembley Stadium. UK urban adventurer James Kingston, renowned for his love of tall structures, stood on top of the iconic archway above the stadium and used the 4G action camera to live stream a breath-taking panoramic view of London.
