Choosing 4G Sim-Only Contracts

For many people taking out a new phone contract means signing up to two years with one network provider, with a deal that includes a handset as well as mobile services. However, that is far from the only option, and sim-only deals are becoming increasingly popular. All 4G network providers offer sim-only deals, usually with either 30 day rolling contracts, or 12 month contracts.

Why Choose a Sim-Only Deal?

There are various reasons why people choose a 4G sim-only deal instead of a contract that includes a handset. Perhaps you already have a 4G ready handset that you are happy with, or you’re able to buy one second hand or on special offer? Even if you pay full price for a sim-free handset you might find that overall it works out cheaper to buy the phone and a sim-only contract than to pay for an all-inclusive contract over two years.

The main reason that users give for choosing a sim-only deal is greater flexibility, especially if you can get a 30 day rolling contract. This means that if you are dissatisfied with the service your network provider is giving you, you can change with just 30 days’ notice. You are also free to take advantage of special offers or discounts, swapping between providers to get the best deal.

4G Sim-Only Comparison

Here are some details of the 4G sim-only deals currently offered by the UK’s 4G network providers:

EE 4G Sim-Only Deals

EE currently offers the most comprehensive range of 4G sim-only products and you can choose between a 30 day rolling contract and a 12 month contract. The amount you pay will depend on the amount of data you need. For example:

  • 1GB data will cost £28 for a 30 day contract and £21 for a 12 month contract
  • 3GB data will cost £33 for a 30 day contract and £26 for a 12 month contract
  • 5GB data will cost £38 for a 30 day contract and £31 for a 12 month contract
  • 8GB data will cost £43 for a 30 day contract and £41 for a 12 month contract
  • 20GB data will cost £63 for a 30 day contract and £61 for a 12 month contract

Vodafone 4G Sim-Only Deals

Vodafone currently have 25% off their sim-only deals. However, they only offer 12 month contracts for 4G; their 30 day sim-only deals are only for 3G customers. Their current price plans are:

  • 6GB data will cost £26 per month for a 12 month contract
  • 8GB data will cost £31 per month for a 12 month contract
  • 12GB data will cost £36 per month for a 12 month contract

O2 4G Sim-Only Deals

Like Vodafone, O2 only offers 12 month contracts for 4G customers that want sim-only deals. Their current price plans are:

  • 1GB data will cost £21 per month for a 12 month contract
  • 5GB data will cost £26 per month for a 12 month contract
  • 8GB data will cost £31 per month for a 12 month contract

Three 4G Sim-Only Deals

Three has a range of sim-only deals that offer ‘all-you-can-eat’ or unlimited data. Their 12 month contract costs £15 per month, and they also offer a 30 day rolling contract that costs between £12.90 and £18, depending on how many voice minutes you want, but including unlimited data. The Three 4G network is currently fairly limited, but if you do live in an area that has 4G from Three this is a great deal.

Which Sim-Only Deal’s For You?

If you want a flexible 30 day contract and large amounts of data, EE is currently the best option, although Three is a provider you should keep an eye on as you may want to switch once they are providing 4G in your area. If you’re happy to sign up to a 12 month contract, O2 and Vodafone offer cheaper plans than EE.

Don’t forget that your handset will need to be unlocked for the network you have chosen, and that if you’re getting a 4G sim-only deal you will need a 4G ready handset. Bear in mind that sim-only is different to pay-as-you-go so if you go over your included minutes, texts, and data, you will have to pay and these charges can be significant. Finally, as you’re on a shorter, more flexible contract, don’t forget to keep shopping around to make sure you stay on the best deal.
