Huawei is making 4G more affordable with the release of its Ascend G6 handset at Mobile World Congress last week. A low cost alternative to the Ascend P6 (a one time record holder for the world’s slimmest smartphone at just 6.18mm), the new handset comes with the latest version of 4G technology, CAT 4, meaning that users will benefit from ultra-fast internet.
The target audience for the Huawei Ascend G6 appears to be social media users, as it has a number of features that make it ideal for use with Facebook, Twitter and other social networks. The most obvious feature is the front facing 5MP camera that is intended to produce high quality selfies.
Features such as beauty mode, and the ability to capture smiles are all designed for selfie snappers, and images can easily be edited by cropping, sharpening, or altering contrast to get the best possible selfie. Users can also benefit from controlled spontaneous snapping, auto-scene recognition, auto-facial enhancement, and 88 degree wide-angle shooting. As the selfie trend looks like it’s here to stay, this could be a very smart move from Huawei.
The handset also features an easy to use keyboard function, with next word prediction and spell check to make adding comments and status updates as simple as taking selfies. Users can also add a ten second audio clip to their images. When these capabilities are combined with super-fast 4G and quick access to social networks, they make the Ascend G6 very appealing for social media use.
According to Richard Yu, CEO, Huawei Consumer Business Group, “With its handy 4G LTE connectivity, easy to use interface and dynamic cameras offering a multitude of photographic opportunities, Huawei is delivering on our promise to ‘Make it Possible’ for more people around the world.”
Features of the Huawei Ascend G6
While it may be a major selling point, the ability to take great selfies isn’t the only feature of the Ascend G6. For a handset that is likely to cost under £200 it has a reasonably high spec. Here are a few of the features we can expect:
- 1.2 GHz quad core processor
- Android 4.3 Jelly Bean
- Huawei Emotion 2.0 interface
- 4.5 inch qHD display with 960 x 540 pixels
- 1GB RAM
- 8GB internal storage
- Micro SD slot to expand storage
- 2000 mAh battery
In addition to the front facing 5MP camera, the Ascend G6 also features an 8MP rear facing camera which records full HD video. The ultra-fast 4G technology will allow users to upload HD videos to social media just as easily as their carefully crafted selfies.
Although it is made from plastic to keep costs low, the Ascend G6 still feels like a good quality handset, and has a faux metal band around the edge that finishes it well. With its rounded base the design of the new handset is very reminiscent of the Ascend P6, but it is slightly thicker with a marginally smaller screen.
The Huawei Ascend G6 will be available in black or white and is expected to be released in the UK in April. Although Huawei have not yet given a definite price it is likely to cost less than £200. The popularity of the high-end Ascend P6 indicates that the more affordable G6 is could be a successful release for Huawei, especially among social media users, and will provide competition for similar spec phones such as the Nokia Lumia 520.
